Petition SOS Levriers

An online Petition protesting about cruelty Galgos and Podencos in Spain has been started by SOS Levriers. Through the petition SOS Levriers hopes to achieve the following goals:

1) that Galgos,Podencos and other breeds of hunting dogs may no longer suffer the physical and mental cruelty which is inflicted on them as a « tradition » in Spain.

2) that all these dogs may live with dignity in their own country.

3) that the number of international rescues may finally decrease.

Campaña para que el Ayuntamiento de Godella permita un refugio digno

El objetivo es conseguir que, de una vez por todas, el Ayuntamiento de Godella permita que una protectora de perros y gatos, la SPAG (Sociedad Protectora de Animales de Godella) tenga un refugio digno y estable.

Este tema tiene nada menos que 10 años, en los que la SPAG viene reclamando un terreno al ayuntamiento. Por el consistorio han pasado distintos grupos políticos y la respuesta ha oscilado de la total indiferencia, pasando por el desalojo forzoso y, de nuevo, la indiferencia.

Ahora la gota ha revasado el vaso, porque el ayuntamiento pretende instalar una hípica en los mismos terrenos que la SPAG reclama. En la nota de prensa adjunta está todo explicado. En Valencia rige la Ley 4/94, que ampara los centros de exterminio de perros y gatos (ej. La Pinada o la perrera de la Mancomunidad). Como todas las protectoras honestas, la SPAG trabaja por encima de sus posibilidades, en un estado de permanente saturación y en la más absoluta precariedad.

Campaign for City Council of Godella to allow a decent shelter

The aim is to ensure that, once and for all, the City Council of Godella allows the animal welfare association for cats and dogs, SPAG (Society for the Protection of Animals in Godella) have a decent shelter and running on a regular basis.

This topic has been not less than 10 years old, in which the SPAG is claiming land for the municipality. Different political groups have being passing along the Consistory and the response has ranged from total indifference, through forced eviction and again indifference.

Now the last straw is because the municipality intends to install a riding club on the same grounds that the SPAG claimed. In the press release attached is explained in detail. In Valencia, governing Law 4 / 94 which protects places of extermination of dogs and cats (eg. La Pinada or kennel Commonwealth). As of an honest animal welfare association it is, SPAG is working beyond their means, in a permanent state of saturation and abject insecurity.

Petición 2007 en contra del maltrato de los Galgos y Podencos en España

Pedimos al Ministro español del entorno, la Señora Cristina Narbona, que acabe con la caza con Galgos y Podencos en España.
Estamos indignados por el maltrato contínuo y la cruel matanza de estos perros, que ni siquiera tienen el estatuto de perros de compañía, ellos que fueron desde hace siglos los perros de compañía preferidos por la nobleza por toda Europa.
¿ Es por eso que se puede maltratarlos a lo largo de su vida, al ser inútiles después de la estancia de caza, penderlos con las patas traseras al suelo para aumentar su agonía, quemarlos vivos, envenenados con herbicida, su trufa o sus patas cortadas con una podadera, arrastrados detrás de un coche, echados en un pozo... pues, torturarlos o abandonarlos, y dejarlos morir de debilidad o por accidente, ellos que son tan sensibles al dolor como nosotros? O ¿ Es por qué los cazadores saben que no seran justiciados (en su gran mayoria) ?
Estas atrocidades en contra de perros inocentes son indignas de una España moderna (dentro de Europa donde la caza con Galgos es prohibida desde mucho tiempo). ¡ Acabar con la caza con Galgos y Podencos en España sería la mejor solución para acabar con estas asquerosas costumbres!

We are deeply moved and outraged by the terrible treatments and the cruel acts that greyhounds and "podencos" are enduring in Spain.
In fact a tremendous number of hunters owning and breeding animals use cruel and savage ways to get rid of them as soon as they don’t need them anymore. That way they end their already miserable lives.
Wounded, beaten, mutilated, greyhounds are left to horrifying agonies, all under the cover of so call "traditions". Well, it’s high time they went beyond these "traditions" as the 21st century begins.
That’s the reason why we appeal to the Spanish Government to ban as quickly as possible the practice of hunting with greyhounds, as it’s already been decided in most of European Union countries.
A reaction is urgent once and for all against all kinds of cruelties endured by these kind, gentle and elegant dogs: they offer their masters great affection and services, but in reward these give them the worse corporal punishments.

Unos 50.000 galgos mueren cada año en España a manos de sus propios dueños, tras ser usados en cacerías. España es el único país europeo donde está permitida la caza con galgo. Al final de la temporada, o cuando el galgo ya no corre con la misma velocidad, los cazadores los matan a tiros, los tiran a pozos, los ahorcan, les ponen inyecciones de lejía, les rompen la médula espinal o los queman vivos. Últimamente también los ahogan.

Amnistía Animal está recogiendo firmas para conseguir que la caza sin galgos sea una realidad en España. Necesitamos reunir un millón de para lograrlo.

Sign for the tortured galgos in Spain

About 50,000 galgos die every year in Spain in the hands of their owners, after being used for hunting. Spain is the only European country where hunting with galgo is allowed. At the end of the hunting season, when a galgo does not run at the same speed, hunters kill hem by shooting them, throw them to wells, hang them, put an injection, they break the spinal marrow to them or they burn them alive. Recently, they also drown them.

Amnistía Animal is gathering signatures to get that the abolition of hunting with galgos becomes a reality in Spain. We need a million signatures for it.

Sign for the rights of the non-hunters

Ecologists in Action has begun collecting signatures from all persons who are declared NON-HUNTERS. That is, contrary to hunting and calling for the same rights enjoyed by hunters. The registration of people is very important to join the voices of people contrary to these ruthless, polluting and retrograde practices.

Barcelona Mata. Jornada contra la tauromaquia

El día 23 de Septiembre finalizó la temporada taurina de La Monumental de Barcelona con el triste y vergonzoso resultado de 108 toros ejecutados en una ciudad en que el Ayuntamiento se ha proclamado contrario a las corridas de toros, en un reflejo de la mayoría ciudadana que representa. Por este motivo, varias entidades de protección y defensa de los animales unieron sus fuerzas para hacer la Jornada Contra les Corridas de toros por las calles de Barcelona, que se llevó a cabo durante todo el día 23, Fiesta de la Mercè, para exigir la abolición total de esta actividad en la ciudad.

Barcelona Kills. Day against Bullfighting

On September 23 the season of bullfighting at the Monumental de Barcelona ended, with the sad and shameful result of 108 bulls executed in a city where the City Council has proclaimed contrary to the bullfights, in a reflection of the majority of citizens representing. For this reason several institutions for the protection and defence of the animals joined forces to make it the Day Against Bullfighting through the streets of Barcelona, which took place throughout the day of the 23rd, the Feast of the Mercè, to demand total abolition of this activity in the city.

Activistas de Ecologistas Extremadura han informado a los visitantes del Parque Nacional de Monfragüe sobre las monterías que se vienen celebrando dentro de dicho Parque, pese a que Ley 5/2007 de la Red de Parques Nacionales prohíbe expresamente la caza deportiva en el interior de éstos.

Este colectivo ha puesto en marcha una campaña de protesta por Internet contra dichas monterías, suscrita por cientos de ciudadanos contrarios a lo que está sucediendo en Monfragüe y otros espacios protegidos, donde la práctica de la caza repercute negativamente en la conservación y el disfrute de sus valores naturales.

Ecologists of Extremadura against Hunting events in Monfragüe National Park

Activists from Extremadura Ecologists have informed visitors of the National Park at Monfragüe about monterías (hunting events) that have been going on in this park, despite the fact that Law 5 / 2007 of the Network of National Parks expressively prohibits this.

El burro de Pero Palo - Villanueva de la Ver, Cáceres

En esta celebración, un burro es sometido a una terrible humillación y sufrimiento tanto físico como psicológico durante más de una hora y media. Toro de la Vega. Tordesillas

El segundo martes de Septiembre, y en curioso homenaje a la Virgen de la Peña, tiene lugar en Tordesillas, Valladolid, una de las mayores brutalidades de España, “El Toro de la Vega”.

El festejo consiste en soltar un toro, el cual es acosado por cientos de personas persiguiéndolo del pueblo al campo, a pie o a caballo, arrojándole largas lanzas acabadas en afiladas hojas de 33 cm. de longitud, que se clavan en su cuerpo, y en ocasiones lo atraviesan.

La tortura pueden llegar a durar una hora, hasta que el animal agotado, destrozado y desangrado por las heridas, se derrumba. En este momento se remata al animal apuñalándolo en la nuca y se le cortan los testículos y el rabo para exhibirlos como trofeo por el pueblo, clavados en la lanza del orgulloso matarife. A menudo, el toro todavía no ha muerto cuando se le corta el rabo y las orejas.

El tormento físico y psíquico que sufren estos animales ha sido denunciado numerosas veces por varias asociaciones de defensa de los animales sin que nada cambie a pesar de las promesas del Ayuntamiento de Tordesillas.

El Ayuntamiento argumenta que el espectáculo está regulado, aunque no indica que esta regularización consiste en no matar al animal antes de tiempo (para que dure más la diversión) ni utilizar vehículos a motor.

Toro de la Vega. Tordesillas

The second Tuesday of September, and an in a curious homage to the Virgen de la Peña, in Tordesillas, Valladolid, takes place on of the most brutality of Spain, that is “El Toro de la Vega”.

The feast consists of leaving a bull running free, ad he is all the time harassed by hundreds of people having persecuted him from the town to the field, on foot or riding a horse, throwing him long lances finished in sharpened leaves of 33 cm. in length, that nail in their body, and sometimes they cross it. The torture can get to last an hour, until the animal exhausted, destroyed and bled by the wounds, collapses. At this moment it becomes ruin to the animal stabbing it in the nape of the neck and the testicles are cut as well as his tail to exhibit them like a trophy got by the town, nailed in the lance of proud matarife. Very often the bull is not yet dead when his tail and ears are cut.

The physical and psychic torment that the animal undergoes has been denounced in several occassions by several associations of defense of the animals without nothing changing despite of the promises of the City council of Tordesillas.

The City council argues that the spectacle is regulated, although does not indicate that this regularización consists of not killing the animal before time (so that diversion is granted for a larger time) nor to use motor vehicles.

El toro de Coria

Cada año, por las fiestas de San Juan, en la localidad de Coria (Cáceres), se hace correr al toro de una manera particularmente cruel por el recinto del casco histórico amurallado hasta que se encierran en un coso.

Decenas de personas lanzan dardos al toro, mediante soplillos o cerbatanas, durante horas. Los dardos punzantes, decorados con papel, se clavan por todo el cuerpo del animal, incluido morros y ojos.

Los toros de Coria se conocen también como los toros “acericos”, en alusión a las almohadillas en que los sastres clavan sus alfileres, ya que al final de espectáculo el animal está tan cubierto de cientos de dardos que asemeja un acerico lleno de alfileres.

Al entrar en la plaza, el toro sufre una entrada espectacular: en la puerta le esperan unos mozos, con unos punzones decorados con guirnaldas muy coloridas, para enganchárselas en el morro al toro.
El muro se conoce como el de "los sustos".
Al entrar en la plaza, le esperan otros mozos que continúan con el mismo sufrimiento hasta que, tras unas dos horas, cuando el animal agonizante ya no resiste más, se acaba con él a tiros de escopeta y se le cortan los testículos.

El toro de Coria

Every year, at the celebration of San Juan in the locality of Coria (Cáceres), the bulls are made to run by a particularly cruel way within the historical old town area until they are locked in a sort of square an used for bullfighting. Tens of people throw darts to the bull, by means of soplillos or blowpipes, for hours. The sharp darts, scenery with paper, nail by all the body of the animal, including nose and eyes.

The bulls of Coria are also known as "the acerico" bulls, in reference to the pads in which the tailors nail their pins, since at the end of the spectacle the animal is fully covered with hundreds of darts that make him look like an acerico plenty of pins. When entering the square, the bull undergoes a spectacular entrance: standing by the door there wait young men, with striker pins decorated with very colorful garlands, to hook them in the nose.

The wall is known like the one "The Scares". When entering further in the square, some more young men wait for him and continue with the same suffering until, after two hours, when the dying animal no longer resists it, ends they kill him by gun shots and his testicles are cut.
