A dog abandoned in a well and his rescuer alerted yesterday Medina del Campo’s firemen. At 11.30 am, these professionals began a rescue at the bottom of a 12 meter depth well on the outside of Velascálvaro, very near to the Villa de las Ferias. The rescue lasted more than an hour and a half, for Carlos David Pariente Zarzuela, ‘Jimmy’, experienced in similar operations all throughout his fireman career, got stuck in the well. Jimmy could save the animal, but got trapped in the well and had to get out of the well with his mates and some members of the Protectora de Animales Scooby help.

It all began on Saturday evening, when Daniel Lopez Garcia was walking his dog “Rusca” in a pine forest near Medina del Campo. When “Rusca” got near the well, it started to bark. Daniel said, “We didn’t heard any barks from the well, but when my dog got near it, we heard the whining”. It was then that Daniel look down and saw the outline of a small animal. He immediately called both the Guardia Civil and Fermín, president of the Protectora de animals Scooby. They suspect that the dog had been down there for two or three days. The rescue couldn’t start until the next day because it took some coordination, but  Medina del Campo’s fire brigade went as soon as they could to the outskirts of Velascálvaro, very near to the Villa de las Ferias to the pine forest.

There at the bottom of a 12 meter well, was an abandoned galgo. It more than an hour and a half for Carlos David Pariente Zarzuela, also know as ‘Jimmy’, to get the galgo out, as Jimmy ended up getting stuck in the well. Many of you might remember Jimmy from the last well rescue that Scooby wrote about in 2005. With help of fire brigade and the Scooby Team, both Jimmy and the galgo made it out of the well alive. Sadly Jimmy reported that at the bottom of the well, there were two bags of dead dogs.

Even more sad and disturbing is that this is very common says, Fermín, “animal abandonment increases in the summer. These wells are animal cemeteries and it is common that instead of abandoning these dogs in the fields, they throw them in here instead.” The rescued galgo, named “Jimmy” was taken to his new home at Scooby to recover from the horrible experience.
