Those of you who follow the news from Spanish shelters reporting about animal cruelty have read a lot about an assortment of animal cruelties throughout the years. And just when you think you heard it all, you get caught by surprise.
There are organisations with the goal to rescue Spanish dogs and there are many discussions from the outside that say that animal welfare is a national problem, and forget that the Spanish organisations and shelters, need all the help we can get. Sometimes it comes from the inside. Many organisations with the same ideals, criticize each other, because we all know best how the work should be done. The conditions for pets in Spanish shelters are never as good as it could be in a home situation, after adoption. But we should all bear in mind that at least we are all trying the best we can to offer a second chance to the innocent animals that deserve it. And if you read the next story, this all won’t need further explanation.
This story comes from the Carcaixent shelter in Valencia. It is about Regina, a 5 year old mixed-breed mastin. And although we realise that you, as a frequent visitor of our website, are more or less used to tragedies in some way, we have to warn you about the incredible cruel details of this story. So please decide upfront if you are ready to read the complete, detailed story below. Already we decided not to publish the most explicit photos. Regina was assassinated in the cruellest way you can imagine. Some very insane people broke into the shelter and she was tied up, sexually abused and beaten to death. And all of this happened right after she had gained some confidence in human beings, thanks to the efforts of the people in the shelter.
Hopefully, her suffering was not completely useless. Hopefully it will open the eyes of the doubtful people who decide that animal abuse is a national problem, and hopefully it will reunite the people who share their love for animals, but lose time on rivalry. The enemies are people like the ones who did this to this poor dog. The least we can do in honour of Regina is to make her tragedy work as an eye-opener and as an inspiration to keep on working as hard as we can to improve animal welfare.
Valencia, June 6, 2008
Regina was a 5 years old mixed Mastin. She was charming and timid. Gradually we got to touch her and even were allowed to kiss her. She did not deserve what they did to her, these cruel, insane people, with no feelings. It was not enough that they did this to Regina but they also took three more dogs from the shelter facilities that were found two days later. Two were found thrown away on the fields, and another was thrown over the fence. They left several open cages and destroyed several fences to gain access to the shelter.
The worst cruelty was paid to Regina. They tied her legs with wire (which was not there when we arrived), sexually abused her, inserted fruit in her anal part and savagely beat her on her head until the poor animal had no strength but to resist and die. She was left in a pool of blood, in such an inhumane, savage and cruel way.
DO NOT ALLOW THIS HAPPEN AGAIN!!!!
