Once upon a time there was a galguero who had several dogs which he took hunting on a regular basis. Last winter inevitable the day came on which he decided that he wanted to get rid of some of his dogs. And so the dogs were put in the car for a one way trip to Scooby. That is what he thought… After a few days his Galga bitch escaped from Scooby by jumping over a wall which was a few metres high. A very good achievement which we had not ever seen before. But also a moment of great panic for the people working there at the time. A huge rescue campaign was formed to get her back safely.
For hours on end she was followed on foot, in the meanwhile doing her lots of hard- to-be-tempted proposals. She did not bought them! A car was also following her but she was much quicker and more capable than a car will ever be. And in the end she was out of sight, gone, disappeared and probably not ever coming back. Therefore her stay at Scooby’s was too short.
We were all in dismay. What would happen to this poor dog. Will she end up at the A6 highway passing trough close by? We did not even dare think of it. Will she become a stray dog, always searching for food and a save place to sleep, forever nursing one litter after another? Enough possibilities, one more ghastly than another. And it kept going through our minds, over and over again. Of all things this should not be happening at Scooby’s. The poor dogs should be safe here and now this happened. In the meantime measures have been taken so these things cannot happen anymore.
A few hours later the liberating phone call came. Her (former) owner called and told us that she returned to him, about 10 kilometres from Scooby. Everyone was relieved and impressed at her achievement. So was the galguero. He was touched that the bitch had taken all this trouble to return to him. To say in fairness he does take good care of his dogs. They are looking good and are well fed. He decided there and then that her glorious return was to be rewarded. She did not have to hunt and was allowed to stay with him as a pet dog. Bravo for this galguero. Unfortunately there are too few like him.
I would have liked ending this story like any other; she lived happily ever after. But no, she did not. A few weeks ago this galguero brought a dog to Scooby again. Once a hunter always a hunter….. When asked how the Galga was doing he told us that at one of her trips she had eaten poison. She died a horrible death. Therefore I end this story feeling frustrated; she did not live ever after but hopefully she lived happily.
