The latest update about the male and mix dogs made quite an impact around the world.  We received many emails from people asking how they could help. Many just offering to donate so they could help with the care of the many dogs at the shelter.  Our partner groups were all able to take many males on the last transport in June.  We also had support from our friends in the US, but due to the summer flight embargo on pets, the dogs are not able to fly from May 15 to Sept 15.  So hopefully in the fall, some male and mix dogs will be able to fly to the US.

We also received emails from concerned people who thought that we were making the wrong decision; by thinking euthanasia was the answer.  Of course for us this is not the immediate answer when we are faced with this problem, but it is a reality and one that we don't take lightly.  The reality of a shelter is that there are going to be dogs that are put to sleep - this happens everywhere, in every shelter, all around the world.  There are just too many dogs and not enough homes. Some people even emailed us and said that they thought it would be better for Scooby to stop taking in new dogs, so the others wouldn't have to be put to sleep.  This might sound like an option, but when galguero stands at the Scooby gate with his sad, thin dog, ready to turn him in, it is impossible to say no.  Of course, we always make sure that the dogs at the shelter are cared for properly.  If there is room and the resources are available, we would never turn down a dog.  But is it not better to take them and give them the help they need, instead of being the one called to rescue it after it has been abandoned or worse... thrown in a well or hung from tree?

As mentioned, the support and response to this problem has been very encouraging.  Since the news of the males and mix dog was published on the news page, we have sent over 25 male and mix dogs to our partner groups and there are still more reserved for the next transport.  But there are still many at Scooby - many that have been here for a long time.  They are good dogs - they deserve a home and we know that they will make great pets.  I encourage you to read the stories on our news page from our adopters who have recently adopted males and mixes from Scooby.  Their stories are heartbreaking and heartwarming.   These dogs will love you just as much as any other dog would, there is no question about that.  Over the next few weeks, we will be adding more dogs to the adoption page.  Please have a look and email us at info@scoobymedina.com if you are interested in adopting a Scooby dog.

In closing, I want to remind you of why the problem of too many dogs  - whether male or female - is still so prevalent and won't go away even after we send these beautiful dogs to homes. This is a worldwide problem and not confined to Spain and Galgos. It's because humans continually keep breeding animals - trying to get the fastest, smartest, best looking dog - whatever the reason, it is for the gain of the person, not the animal.  These animals fall victim to human greed and suffer immensely as a result. There are so many dogs that are homeless that you can adopt, no matter what you are looking for. If you want a puppy, there are puppies. If you want a pure bred - there are purebreds. If you want an older dog - there are certainly plenty of those!

Whatever you are looking for, you can find it, if your heart is in the right place.  You don't have to buy a dog from a breeder - go and adopt one - from your local shelter, a specific breed rescue of your choice, from Scooby!  Right now, there are approximately 300 dogs that need a home at Scooby... and that's just one shelter in the world - can you imagine how many there are around the world?!  If you are thinking about get a dog, cat or any pet - please adopt - it's the best thing you can for you and the animals. And don't exclude the males from your choices - they are super!

A very big thank you to everyone who has donated to the shelter and to those that have adopted!
